Brian Jonestown Massacre has announced some North American spring tour dates, including a June 10 stop in Cincy at the Mad Hatter - in support of their new album. I haven't listened to said album, which came out February 23, but the title (
Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?) falls in tradition with the band's long history of naming things (songs, albums, themselves) after high profile psychedelic figures/ album titles/ band names (see also
Their Satanic Majesty's Second Request;
My Bloody Underground;
Bringing it All Back Home Again; Brian Jonestown Massacre). Pretty sure CD Central has it on wax, maybe I'll pick it up today if someone hasn't beat me to it.....
If you're on the fence about these guys, as I can be from time to time, I will say that I was really taken with their 2008 release (
My Bloody Underground). The album is more diverse than most of the others I've heard, with touches of experimental noise, some space-rock, even a gorgeous solo piano tune – an overall nice departure from some of their previous albums, many being arguably too heavy on the perfectly lovely, yet perfectly repetitive, sad-bastard neo-folk songs.
Regardless, the band is epic, and known for its unpredictable live performance. Mark June 10 on yr calendars.
